May Foote Lee 1919-2013 May Foote Lee (nee May Katharine Strangfeld) died on Aug. 19, 2013, in Bennington. She was affectionately known to her many friends as "Peter" and to her grandchildren and great grandchildren as "Petie." Mrs. Lee was born on March 3, 1919, in Allendale, N.J. She was the fifth of six children of Clemens S. and Augusta (Hasselbach) Strangfeld. She graduated from Ramsey NJ High School in 1936, and earned her RN from the Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing in New York City in 1940. She married Charles C. Foote, MD, of New York, N.Y., on Sept. 17, 1942. He was the Medical Director for General Motors Corporation in the New York City area, and he was on the Staff of Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, where he also maintained a private practice. They had three daughters whom they raised in Englewood, N.J., and maintained a summer residence in Cornwall, Conn., where they had many friends and family. Dr. Foote died in 1966. In 1971, she married Earl G. Holmes, a retired vice president of the Bank of New York, and they moved to Dorset. After Mr. Holmes' death in 1988, she married James W. Lee, the former owner of The Barrows House in Dorset. Mr. Lee died in 1999. In 2005, Mrs. Lee moved to The Equinox Village in Manchester, Vt. Mrs. Lee is survived by her three daughters, Katharine (C. Brown) Lingamfelter of Stuart, Fla., Janet Stones of Bethel, Conn., and Cynthia Foote (Ward Hinkle) of Orchard Park, N.Y., and by one brother, John (Jane) Strangfeld of Chatham, N.J. She is also survived by eight grandchildren (Christopher, Stacy, and Bronson Lingamfelter; Ian, Ben, and Katharine Stones; and Charlotte and Amanda Hinkle), and by three great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and by devoted members of her extended families, including Penelope and William Ludwin of Key Colony Beach, Florida. She was predeceased by her sister, A. Marian Strangfeld, and by three brothers, William, Richard, and Edward (Lorraine). Mrs. Lee served on the Boards of the Englewood NJ Hospital, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Southern Vermont, and the Dorset Nursing Association. She also served in many capacities at the Dorset Congregational Church, and as a docent at the Southern Vermont Art Center and Hildene in Manchester. She was a member of the Ekwanok Country Club, the Dorset Field Club, and the Manchester Garden Club. She was an excellent athlete, and she won many club and regional tennis and platform tennis tournaments through the years at her various clubs, including the Englewood Field Club in Englewood, N.J., and the Cream Hill Lake Association in Cornwall, Conn. She greatly enjoyed traveling and foreign cultures, and over the years traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. A strong and dignified lady, Mrs. Lee gave and received respect. She had a lively, engaging, witty and occasionally mischievous manner. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she followed and supported them in their endeavors. She will be greatly missed. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services will be held at The Dorset Congregational Church at 2 p.m. on Sept. 7, 2013. Interment will be at the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, N.J., at 1 p.m. on Sept. 9, 2013. Contributions may be sent to the Dorset Nursing Association, PO Box 549, Dorset, VT 05255. Funeral arrangements are under the care of the MAHAR FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICE, 385 Bonnet Street, Manchester Center.
