Mary Lee Oblinger Freeman New Hartford Mary Lee (Mimi) Freeman, age 68, of New Hartford, NY, and formerly of Carmichael, CA, died February 1, 2010, at home, with her family present. Mimi was born in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Gates Sackett and Mary Cochran Oblinger. She was educated in the Skaneateles Central School District, earned a BA degree from Miami University of Ohio and Masters in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She was married to Herbert F. Freeman, Jr., in Lake Forest, IL, June 21, 1969. Mimi worked for the Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) Welfare Department and in their Child Welfare Department, several social work positions in Warren, Ohio, as a medical social worker for the VNA and for Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento, and finished her career as a medical social worker for the dialysis program at Faxton St. Lukes Hospital in New Hartford. Mimi was a member of the New Hartford Presbyterian Church, the League of Women Voters, Central New York Parkinsons Group and the Welcome Wagon Book Club. Mimi was interested first in her family, then in literature, public policy, performing arts, gender equality and bridge. A good listener, always keen for a good conversation and a good friend, Mimi was an exceptional social worker. She supported peace and human rights and admired the work of those who care for people at home. She was happy to return to her beloved Central New York fifteen years ago. Mimi is survived by her husband, Herbert F. Freeman, Jr.; her three sons, Andrew Gates Freeman (Suzanne Ferris), of Santa Monica, CA, John David Freeman (Nicole Aragi), of New York City, and Timothy Frederick Freeman, of Utica; her sister, Sally Edwards, of Bonita Springs, FL; her brother, Stephen Gates, of Los Angeles, CA; her nieces, Ashley Bradley and family and Maggie Kennedy and family, both of New York City; and her brother-in-law, David Frederick Freeman (Cheryl and son Curt), of Sacramento, CA. Mimi was predeceased by her mother and father-in-law, Herbert Freeman and Frieda Stuermann Freeman; her uncle and aunt, John and Lois Oblinger; her uncles, Harvey and Lee Cochran; and her nephew, Nathan Freeman. The family would like to thank RCIL adult day care, Independence Care, Hospice, Family Services of the Mohawk Valley, New Hartford Presbyterian Church and friends for their support. A memorial service will be on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at a time to be announced at the New Hartford Presbyterian Church. There are no calling hours.
