Mary died on December 18, 2014. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family in St. Jude's Anglican Home, where she had been very well looked after by all the SCU staff, and Drs. Sent and Robinson, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude.Mary was born in Singapore, the only girl in a family with six brothers. She excelled as an elementary school teacher, and was declared Best Teacher of the Year in two consecutive years. In 1959, she married Hoe Guan Lee. In 1974, Mary and Hoe Guan immigrated to Canada with their three young children. She adapted well to life in Canada, making many new friends. As a medical office assistant to Hoe Guan, she got on very well with the patients. She had a great sense of humour and a ready smile. She was an accomplished home maker and a very good cook, showing a mastery of Singapore cuisine. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano, dancing, tennis, travel, knitting and sewing. Later, she was to show a natural aptitude for taichi. She enjoyed the grandchildren, taking them on outings, showering them with treats and love. She is survived by her husband Hoe Guan, daughter Siew Yin ( Ralph Case ), and sons Siew Jin ( Elizabeth Stead ) and Siew Ming ( Deborah Gumina ), and six grandchildren - Russell, Geoffrey, Sally, Tilda, Tristan, and Christopher. In Singapore, four brothers - Septson, Sidney, David and George Fones, and their families, survive her. Two brothers, Christopher and Morris Fones, have predeceased her. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby on Saturday January 10, 2015 at 2.00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude's Anglican Home in Vancouver will be much appreciated.
