Mother Mary Jane Smith passed from this life into eternal glory on Thursday, December 20, 2001. She was a born in Sumter, SC to the late Samuel and Sophia Brown-Robinson on August 15, 1913. She attended the Sumter, SC Public School System. While in Sumter, she married William Burroughs, Sr. From this union was born William Burroughs, Jr. (Chico) and Ruth Burroughs-Harris. Following the death of her husband she was later joined in marriage to John W. Smith. To this union a daughter Gladys Lorraine was born. "Mother Smith or Nana" as she was affectionately called, first joined the Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church after moving to New York. There she served on the Gospel Chorus. After being a member for more than 30 years, she joined The Bible Church of Christ and later became a charter member of Christian Love Tabernacle, under the pastorate of her son-in-law Bishop Leon Harris. She was preceded in death by her husbands William Burroughs, Sr. and John W. Smith; her son William Burroughs, Jr.; her sisters Mrs. Sarah Wright, Mrs. Jessie Anderson, Mrs. Elizabeth Benjamin and Mrs. Louise Prioleau. Left to cherish her memory are daughters and sons-in-law (whom she considered her sons) Dr. Ruth B. Harris and Bishop Leon Harris, Deaconess Gladys Lorraine B. Prescott and Deacon Levi Prescott; her sisters Mrs. Sophia Wigfall, Mrs. Annie Pringle and Mrs. Naomi Robinson; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, including many devoted church members and friends. Reposing 2-4 and 7-9 pm Wednesday at the Christian Love Tabernacle, 5 Manor House Square, Yonkers, NY. Funeral Thursday 11 am at the Church. Interment Beechwood Cemetery, New Rochelle, NY.
