OLEAN - Mary J. Melnyk, 80, of Olean, died peacefully Sunday (Nov. 16, 2014) after a fulfilling life filled with family and friends. She was born Mary Jane Wyviorka on May 15, 1934, in Olean, a daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Wyviorka.Mary attended Olean High School and worked as a secretary for Dresser Clark.On Aug. 19, 1967, she married Walter J. "Lodge" Melnyk. She was a beloved wife, a caring mother to Susan Melnyk Bruder and Matthew Melnyk and a friend to all.She was an active volunteer and leader in her children's school and extracurricular activities, as well as St. Mary of the Angels parish, the Pulaski Club Ladies Auxiliary and within the community.Sharing 22 years of laughter together, she was predeceased by her husband Jan. 17, 1990.After raising her children, she returned to work for Jamestown Community College in the financial aid office and St. Mary's Parish.Mary enjoyed gardening, dancing, traveling, cooking, baking and supporting her favorite sports teams - the New York Yankees, St. Bonaventure basketball and the Buffalo Bills. Always remembering a birthday or other occasion, her loved ones were never without a thoughtful gift and personal note celebrating their special day.Mary is survived by her two children and their spouses, Susan Melnyk Bruder and her husband Peter and Mathew Melnyk and his wife Mariela Ramirez Melnyk; and three grandchildren; a sister, Ann Malone of Olean; and brother, Edward Wyviorka of Olean.In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Rose Malone; and brothers, Joseph and Anthony Wyviorka.Friends may call at the Guenther Funeral Home, 1303 E. State St., Olean, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Friday (Nov. 21, 2014) at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean with the Rev. Gregory Dobson as celebrant. Burial will be at the St. Bonaventure Cemetery.A Scripture wake service will be held in the funeral home Wednesday evening.Memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Church, Olean.
