DOVER-FOXCROFT - Mary Hughes Stuart, lifelong resident of Dover-Foxcroft, passed away Feb. 6, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at a local hospital. She was born Aug. 30, 1907, in Foxcroft, to Ralph Wade and Maude (Merrill) Hughes, in the family home, where she resided most of her life. Mary graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1925, attended the School of Practical Art, Boston; and Ranson Academy, Paris, after which she returned to Boston to do newspaper illustration and advertising for Filenes and R.H. Stearns. After raising her family, she attended Haystack Craft School, Deer Isle, where she learned spinning, weaving and silver-smithing, while working with world famous artists. She was a rockhound, silversmith, weaver, oil painter and then a successful watercolorist. She sold many of her paintings, woven goods and handmade jewelry, and won many prizes in art shows. One prize she was especially proud of was a first place at the Farnsworth Museum for her woven Kachinas, inspired, along with many of her paintings, by her winter stays in Sedona, Ariz., where she met several lifelong friends. Her love of flowers and gardening, along with her appreciation of the landscape around her, became the subject of many of her paintings and weavings, and provided her with many hours of enjoyment. Mary was an interesting, kind and generous person with an intense curiosity and passion for life, treasured by family and friends. She leaves a huge void in the lives of her family and will be dearly missed. Mary is survived by a loving family: daughter, Judith Stuart Segerson of Dover-Foxcroft; and sons, Peter Dan Dunning and wife, Jackie, of Elkins, N.H., Alan Wade Stuart and wife, Joy Augenstern, of Hull, Mass., and John Merrill Stuart and wife, Gloria, of Topsham. She was the grandmother of 15, Tim, Victoria, John, Mike, Kelley, Sue, Jennifer, Terri, Patti, Kathi, Adam, Ed, Chris, Kim and Taylor; great-grandmother of 26 and great-great-grandmother of five. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Baker Stuart; and brother, Donald Scott Hughes. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Dr. Margaret Sheffield officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot at Rural Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to a local charity of your choice.
