HUGHES-CUMBERBIRCH, Mary Elizabeth Peacefully on June 14th, 2006. Mary, a native daughter, passed away in her 83rd year after a prolonged and gallant struggle with Parkinson's. Mary is predeceased by her first husband James Reginald (Rex) Hughes (1979) and her brother Patrick John McLorie (1992). She will be sadly missed by her devoted husband Peter, sister Velma (Glen) Ryder, Victoria, and sister-in-law Ria McLorie, Tofino. Surviving their mother are Mary's sons Peter (Margo), Ian (Cindy), and Aaron (Laura); granddaughters Carly, Mary, and Lia, all of Victoria. Also left to mourn are her husband Peter's sons in Vancouver, Peter, John (Lil), Alan (Nancy), Grant (Armeda) Cumberbirch and their families along with nieces, nephews, and many long-time friends. Mary attended Victoria High School and was a charter member of Chapter AJ of the Sisters of P.E.O. While primarily a homemaker, Mary worked for B.C. Tel, the Canadian Military during WWII, and later very much enjoyed working at Ego Interiors. She was a wonderful cook, marvellous hostess and had the quickest sense of humour ever. Mary will be missed by all who's life she touched. Although their years together were brief, Mary and Peter found rich enjoyment in their friendship, interests, travels, families and above all, each other. A special thanks to the staff of Glengarry Hospital, Richmond Unit for their compassionate care of Mary. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 3821 Cedar Hill Cross Road on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 2:00pm, Reverend Peter Parker officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of P.E.O. for the support of women attending post secondary education, and mailed to P.E.O. Chapter AJ, c/o W.
