WATERVILLE -- Mary Hill Beals, 89, of Waterville, passed away Feb. 16, 2010, at Oak Grove Center in Waterville.Born Feb. 23, 1920, in Waterville, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Martha (Terry) Hill. Mary spent her childhood in Belgrade Lakes and Waterville in the hotel business. She then moved to New York City where she pursued a career as a secretary. Later, she met and married Norman W. Beals in 1949. Together, they owned and operated Berry's Stationers for many years. Mary spent many wonderful summers at her camp on Long Pond in Belgrade Lakes Village.Mary was passionate about many things in her life. She enjoyed spending time refinishing furniture with the Monday Ladies Group; she was cofounder of the Evelyn Holmes Chapter and held many positions in the National Guild of Historical Society of Early American Decoration; she taught needlework and decorative painting at the YMCA and her home, and she was an active member of both the Belgrade and Waterville historical societies.Mary is survived by her daughter, Martha Beals and her husband, Willard Millis, of Sidney, Kendra Millis and Matt Robbins and their daughter, Emma, of Oakland, and Drs. Benjamin/Sara Millis and their son James of Athens, Greece and Mary's nephew John Bragg and his wife Pam and their son Brandon of Florida.The family would like to thank the staff at Oak Grove and, particularly, the compassionate people of HealthReach Hospice for making Mary's final days comfortable and peaceful. There will be no services at Mary's request. There will be a celebration of her life at the home of her daughter. Please call for details.
