Mary O. Harris - SAVANNAH - Mary Oppen Harris, 90, of Savannah, Georgia, died Friday, April 25, 2014, at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Savannah. She graduated from Savannah High School, attended Armstrong State College, and was among the first female graduates of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was a former school teacher at the Pape School. Mary was a long time member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday School, participated in the women's guild, and served as a frequent tour guide at the church Parish House, the Green-Meldrim House. Mary was a member of the Daughters of the American Colonists and the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she often presented the DAR good citizen award to worthy Savannah students. She was a long time member of the Savannah Yacht Club and enjoyed her former bridge and sewing clubs. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Henry Bullard Harris. She was mother to Hank, Helen, and Carl; mother-in-law to Linda, Bill, and Julie, and devoted grandmother to Helen, Carolyn, Henry, Sarah S., John, Charlie, Janie, and Sarah H. One of Mary's favorite places in Savannah was Bonaventure Cemetery where she found peace and comfort. She returned there to her final resting place following a graveside service on Saturday.
