-->Mary Frances Grimes SPARTANBURG, SC-- Mary Frances Grimes, 86 of 400 Webber Road, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born February 8 1922, in Florence, SC, she was the daughter of the late Jack D. and Lydia Bell Grimes. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, she enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately after her graduation, serving as a radio decoder. After completing her tour in the Army, she attended and graduated from medical technology school. She went to work in Virginia and Florida before deciding to come back to Spartanburg in 1955 to open her own medical laboratory which served Spartanburg General Hospital (currently Spartanburg Regional Medical Center). After retiring from her medical laboratory, she went to work for SC Crop and Livestock Reporting Services doing farm surveys. She worked with Laidlaw Environmental Services and also did surveys for theaters and restaurants. As a lifelong dream, Miss Grimes possessed a passion and vision for the Spartanburg Animal Welfare League well before its time, and became its founder and first President in 1964. She was a member of the Pilot Club, Thursday Bridge club, a volunteer for Mobile Meals, attended Sunday School at White Oak Estates, enjoyed playing golf, and reading. Frances had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed sharing a joke or two, and never met a stranger. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by Dr. G. Daniel McCall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
