BRATTLEBORO -- Mary Florence Kent, 86, a lifelong resident of town, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, April 30, 2006, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.Mrs. Kent was born on June 16, 1918, the daughter of Robert and Florence (Smith) Parmenter. Raised in Brattleboro, she attended both St. Michael's Parochial School and St. Michael's High School.She was employed for many years as a wood finisher for the former Templeton Furniture Co., located on Flat Street up until the time the company closed. She later worked for a furniture company in Montague, Mass., retiring in 1982.For the last several years, Mrs. Kent made her home with her daughter on Canal Street and previously resided at Fairview Village.Active fraternally, she was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Brattleboro Aerie No. 2445, the American Legion Auxiliary, Brattleboro Post 5, and the VFW Carl M. Dessaint Post 1034 where she served as the first president after the auxiliary was formed. Mrs. Kent had the distinguished honor of having the auxiliary meeting room at the new VFW Post on Black Mountain Road home named after her.Mrs. Kent was a longtime communicant of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church.In July of 1937, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, she was married to George H. Kent. Her husband of 53 years predeceased her in 1990.Survivors include a son, Brian Kent and his wife Deborah of Brattleboro; a daughter, Judith Norcia, also of Brattleboro; two brothers, Harvey Parmenter and George Parmenter, both of Brattleboro; a sister, Agnes “Aggie” Gilson of Brattleboro; five grandchildren, Michael Norcia, Lisa Cote and Noel Lynch of Brattleboro, Leonard Lynch of Hinsdale, N.H., and Heather Kent Mason of Springfield; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by four brothers, Robert Parmenter, Charles Parmenter, Richard Parmenter and Jerry Parmenter, and a sister, Lucy “Judy” Nims.The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Walnut Street. Burial and committal services will follow in Saint Michael's Parish Cemetery.A reception will follow the committal services to be held at the VFW Post 1034 on Black Mountain Road, hosted by the auxiliary and membership.Friends are invited to call at the ATAMANIUK FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.Memorial contributions in Mrs. Kent's name may be made to ALS Association, National Headquarters, 21021 Ventura Blvd. No. 321 Woodland Hills, CA 91364; or to American Diabetes Association, P.O.
