Mary FitzGerald McClure 1921 - 2013 NORTHAMPTON - Mary Frances FitzGerald McClure, Mother, Friend, Teacher...Loved Life. She was a life long resident of Northampton, went home to the Lord, surrounded by her family, on May 9, 2013, at Linda Manor. She was born on October 15, 1921, the daughter of the late Helen Slattery FitzGerald and John E. FitzGerald, Sr. Mary was educated in local schools, and graduated from St. Michael's High School. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts, where she majored in English, and gained a lifelong love of poetry and literature. Mary began her career as a teacher at Leeds School in Northampton. She taught at Hill Institute, Vernon Street, Jackson Street, and Ryan Road Schools, retiring after a forty year career as a teacher. She loved teaching, particularly sharing her love of literature with her students through reading aloud. She traveled widely as a young woman, teaching in California and the Panama Canal Zone. In Panama she met and married the love her life, Kendall. They relocated to Northampton after living in Texas, and raised their children on Vernon Street. Mary experienced life to the fullest. She loved to travel, and swam in the Dead Sea, visited the Holy Sepulcher, Spain, Ireland, and France. She loved the beaches in Maine, St. Simons Island, and Puerto Rico. Numerous friends enriched her life immensely, and she appreciated this blessing to the very end of her life. Mary loved life! She always had a smile, and enjoyed trivia evenings with her friends, reading to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the beach, and travel with Kendall. She will be remembered for her welcoming smile, tremendous sense of humor, and deep love for her family and friends. She was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Church, a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality, and the Round Hill Club. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Kendall B. McClure, and brother, John E. FitzGerald Jr. She is survived by her three children, Barbara (Stuart) Neslin, Rome GA, Patricia McClure of Portland, ME, and Dwight McClure of Westfield. A loving grandmother, she leaves to cherish her memory seven grandchildren, Sheila (David) Pinkard, Andrew (Camila) Neslin, Nathan Storey, Justin Lockenwitz, Kenny Laughton, Annie McClure-Laughton, and Thomas McClure. She is also survived by six great-children, Brandon, Grace, Kendall Mary, Annabella, Stuart, and Emilia. She leaves her loving sister, Barbara Powers, of Atco, NJ, and numerous dearly loved nieces and nephews. Calling hours at the Ahearn Funeral Home will be on Sunday, May 12, 2013, from 1-4 pm. Funeral will be held at the Ahearn Funeral Home on Monday, May 13, 2013, at 8:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 9:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family would like to extend deep thanks to Mary's wonderful friends who provided friendship, support, and laughter, the Eucharistic Ministers who faithfully brought her Communion, and to the warm, caring staff at Linda Manor.
