MARY FAULKNER JORDAN Mrs. Jordan passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2003 in Jupiter, Florida. She was born May 8, 1910 at Urbanna, Virginia at the family home called "Lansdown", a small plantation formerly owned by Arthur Lee, a cousin of Robert E. Lee and now listed by the Preservation Society as one of the historic homes in Virginia. The house was built in 1746. Mary Faulkner Jordan attended the University of Richmond and graduated Cum Laude in 1931, receiving a B.A. degree in Liberal Arts, majoring in Latin and English. She sang in the college glee club, was on the college debating team and received the Tanner Greek Medal for her outstanding studies on classical Greek culture and research in classical Greek literature. She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. From 1931 to 1934, she taught Latin and English at Glen Allan High School, located in the suburbs of Richmond, Virginia. In 1934, she was married to Dr. Robert Hough Jordan, who received his Medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. His first internship was at the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia and while there, Mary was employed by the owners of local coal mines to investigate the emotional and financial needs of coal miners and see that their disability and needs were cared for. In 1935, when Dr. Jordan went to Bellevue Hospital in New York City to get further medical training, Mary did bedside teaching at Nassau County Children's Hospital in order for them to pass their state regent exams when they were able to return to public school. In 1936, Dr. Jordan was a medical resident at Yale Medical School in New Haven, Conn., and also studied Diabetes under Dr. Joslin and Cardiology under Dr. Paul White. During this time, Mary was employed by the City of New Haven to work in the Department of Charities and Correction. She also did volunteer work with the United Fund of Greater New Haven, the American Heart Association and was on the Board of Trustees for the Women's Auxiliary of Yale New Haven Hospital. She was a member of the Yale Faculty Club, the Yale Graduate Club and an active member of the American Association of University Women. From 1942 to 1946, Dr. Jordan served in the Medical Corp. in World War II, was located in India and was Commanding Officer and Medical Director of hospitals being built for the Air Corp. Mrs. Jordan and their 3 year old daughter lived with her family in Virginia and in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1946, they returned to New Haven for Dr. Jordan to resume his practice in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and in 1948, he became Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale Medical School. In 1957, Mrs. Jordan became associated with the William A. Gamble Company as a Real Estate Broker and continued in Real Estate until 1980, when she and her husband retired. In 1982, they moved to Florida to reside at the Waterford in Juno Beach. Dr. Jordan died April 11, 1997. Mary Jordan is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Schulz and her husband, Roger of Toronto, Canada, son Robert Hough Jordan of Evergreen, Colorado and his wife Carolyn, and two grandsons, Andrew Schulz of Seattle, WA and Alexander Crain Jordan of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 PM Monday, July 14, 2003 at the Waterford, 601 Universe Boulevard, Juno Beach, FL. Interment will take place in Christ Church, Virginia.
