Mary Ellen McKenzie - JESUP - Mary Ellen McKenzie, 81, died Sunday, November 16, 2008. The Chatham Co., GA, native had lived in Wayne Co., GA, the past 35 years, was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She was honored as Wayne County's citizen of the year in 1979 & had served as past president of the Dogwood Garden Club, St. Joseph's Catholic Women's Guild, Altamaha Women's Club, & the Band Boosters, she also received the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1993, her leadership with the Dogwood Festival held each spring in Jesup, has been very successful in promoting Wayne County & supporting worthwhile endeavors. An employee of Wayne Memorial Hospital, she served for 26 years, eight of which she worked as the Director of Volunteer Services. In 2006, the Georgia Hospital Association awarded her as the Georgia Director of Volunteer Services, recently the Wayne Memorial Hospital Hospice Room was re-decorated and renamed in her honor as the "McKenzie Hospice Suite". In addition, a $1,000 scholarship for a community-oriented student has been established in honor of her by Wayne Memorial Hospital. Survivors: daughter and son-in-law: Mary Ellen and Roger Dunne of Aberdeen, MD, two sons: Charles L. McKenzie, III of Savannah, GA, Michael McKenzie of Atlanta, GA, seven grandchildren: Katie Johnson, Tracy Wieczorek, William Dunne, James Dunne, Charles Eric McKenzie, Neil Patrick McKenzie, and Drew Nicholas McKenzie, five great-grandchildren: Charlotte Clair Johnson, Colin Christopher Johnson, Charles Aidan McKenzie, Destin Lawrence McKenzie, and Jackson Lynwood McKenzie. Visitation: 10 to 11 A. M. Thursday from the church. Funeral Services: Memorial services will be held 11 A. M.
