MURPHY Mary Elizabeth (Monagan) Murphy, age 85, died on Sunday, October 12, 2003, in Newcastle, Maine, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Thomas Lyons. She was the wife of the late Richard B. Murphy, her husband of 62 years. Mrs. Murphy was born on December 13, 1917, in Waterbury, the daughter of Dr. Charles A. Monagan and Margaret M (Mulry) Monagan. When her mother died in 1920, Mrs. Murphy and her three siblings were raised by her father s sister, Mary Monagan, "Aunt Min." She graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in 1938 and returned to Waterbury to work as a teacher and social worker. She married Mr. Murphy in 1940 and raised five children in Waterbury and Middlebury. She maintained a lifelong commitment to St. Mary s Hospital, where her father and brother had served as staff physicians, and when her children were grown, she worked there as a volunteer for many years. Mrs. Murphy was the spiritual center of a large family and community. Her prayers were sought and generously offered for enumerable causes and intentions. She loved literature and wit, and she gave a warm welcome to all who came to her home. Mrs. Murphy is survived by her brothers, former member of Congress, John S. Monagan of Washington, D.C., and Dr. Thomas M. Monagan of Waterbury; her daughters, Mary E. Smith of Newport Beach, Calif., and Catherine A. Lyons of Newcastle, Maine; and by her sons, Richard B. Murphy Jr. of Orleans, Mass., Joseph M. Murphy of Takoma Park, Md., and William P. Murphy of East Hartland, Conn. Mrs. Murphy was the grandmother of 11 grandchildren: Margaret Mullally, Maurice T.C. Smith, Parthenia Dinora, Leah Sanders, Richard B. Murphy III, Maura Lyons, Tara Lyons, Daniel Lyons, Mary Murphy, Anna Murphy and Maeve Murphy; and five great-grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Mullally, Sean Mullally, Brendan Mullally, Maurice V. Smith II, and Sarah Dabney Murphy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003, at noon at St. John of the Cross Church in Middlebury. Burial will follow Mass at the old Middlebury Cemetery in Middlebury. Local arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.
