Mary Elizabeth Davis CHAPIN - Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Davis of Chapin, SC, born in 1945 in Hazlehurst, GA, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2012, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, WY. Libby was preceded in death by her husband James R. Davis Jr., her parents Zeb and Sarah (Sowell) Phillips, and her sister Brenda Phillips. She is survived by her son Trey Davis, daughter-in-law Ellie Martin, granddaughter Livea Martin-Davis, her brother Robert Larry Phillips and his wife Sue, her brother Samuel Ashley Phillips and his wife Terry, and many close friends all the way from the coast of South Carolina to the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. A leader of the family from an early age, Libby was responsible for the well being of many folks throughout her life. She made frequent long trips to the west to aid her son in his conservation work and family efforts. She and her brother Sam, who lived nearby in South Carolina, took many boat trips to maintain the beauty of Lake Murray's islands and to lowcountry coastal islands to enjoy bird life. She loved kayaking, visiting Yellowstone National Park, which she did numerous times even in deep winter via snowshoe, and spending time with her dog. Libby recently moved to Wyoming and spent her final three months with Trey, Ellie, and granddaughter Livie, exploring the Big Horn Mountains and the beautiful town of Sheridan. Libby's life will be memorialized at the Sheridan Memorial Cemetery with a full view of the Cloud Peak Wilderness. A small memorial gathering in South Carolina will be held in October at a time and place to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the one of the organizations listed below.
