Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Downey died peacefully on January 17, 2009, after a long illness. Mary was born in Middletown, NY on May 22, 1926, the daughter of Mary Catherine "Mabel" and Edwin Johnson. In Middletown, she met and married the late Joseph T. Downey. They moved to Mamaroneck, where Joe became principal of Mamaroneck High School and where they raised their four children. Survivors include her four children: Timothy (Sue), Nicholas (Sharon), Meg (Thomas) and Norah (Frank); five grandchildren; sister-in-law, Martha J. Downey; several nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held at 9:15 Wednesday January 21, at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd., Westwood, NJ; 201-664-0292. Following the viewing, a Catholic Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X, Old Tappan, NJ at 11 AM. Memorial contributions in Mary's name may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation.
