Mary Elizabeth Harkness Formerly of Reading and West Chester, PA, died September 15, 2003 at Bethany Manor, Horseheads, NY, from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. Mary was the daughter of Edward Dudley and Ernestine Wachter Harkness. Born September 26, 1929 in Sellersville, PA, she graduated from Wyomissing High School, Wyomissing, PA. She married George "Ted" Clark in 1955. She was pre-deceased by brothers, Emil and Edward, and half sister, Doris Harkness. Surviving family members include Ted Clark of West Grove, PA; son and daughter-in-law, USAF Major George E. and C. Jane Clark of West Chester, PA; daughter and son-in-law, Caroline C. and James E. Matthews III of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Christopher, Susannah and Katherine Matthews and George "Robbie" Clark. Also surviving are brothers, John and Thomas (Ann); sisters Caroline - Sister Marie Ernestine OSF, Alice Southworth, Helen Louise Southworth, Katherine (Harold) Fatzinger, Ernestine (Carl) Remp; and half sister, Fay (Irvin) Sweigert; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Mary was an operator for Bell of Pennsylvania and later a secretary. Before her illness, she was a Girl Scout leader, sang in a women's chorale and loved to talk about her large family. She was an avid reader and shared her love of books with her children and grandchildren. Arrangements are under the direction of Barber Funeral Home, Horseheads NY. Calling hours are Wednesday, September 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 1034 W. Broad Street, Horseheads, NY; services follow at 2:30 p.m. The Reverend Dr. Robert O. Sherburne will officiate. Burial is at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia, PA, on Saturday, September 20, at 10 a.m.; the Rev. Major Kenneth Crooks, USAF officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary's memory to: Horseheads First United Methodist Church, Living Memorial Fund, 1034 West Broad St., Horseheads, NY 14845 or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upstate NY Chapter, 1650 South Ave., Suite 100, Rochester, NY 14620-3901.
