Mary E. (Demer) McGowan of Johnson City Mary E. (Demer) McGowan, born April 5, 1916 in Binghamton, died at the James G. Johnston Nursing Center on July 1, 2007. Mary had lived happily at the Hilltop Retirement Community in Johnson City for nearly 12 years. Prior to that, she lived on Edgewood Road in Binghamton with her husband, Richard, who predeceased her in 1994 after 55 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her beloved sons-in-law, John C. Rowe and H. James Heffern. She is survived by her four children and their families, Fred and Joan McGowan, Frances and David Hodgkins, Mary Heffern, and James McGowan; grandchildren, Brian and Jennifer Heffern, Sarah Heefern, and Eileen (Heffern) and Christopher Hairel, Jeff and Maureen Stauring, and Todd Stauring; great-grandchildren, Declan and Gavin Heffern and Sarah, Caitlin, Samantha, Seth and Joseph Stauring. Mary was very close to her sisters, who also survive her, Jane TenEyck, Joan Buckman, Ann Marks, and Sara Jackson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of "greats". Mary's life was devoted to her husband and children. She especially enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother ("GG"). Mary was cheerful, kind, and helpful to everyone, and had a wonderful sense of humor. We have been blessed to have her with us for 91 years. Her legacy of love and caring will go on in all of us. She will be greatly missed. Arrangements are by the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass for family, friends, and Mary's special friends at Hilltop will be celebrated by Fr. Matthew Brown in the Chapel at Hilltop Retirement Center, 286 Deyo Hill Road, Johnson City, N.Y., on Monday, July 9, 2007 at 11 a.m., to be followed by a private burial in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society in Mary's memory.
