CHELMSFORD - Mary Elizabeth "Molly" (Hoar) Casey, 99, of Chelmsford, formerly of Lowell and Pompano Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Chelmsford.Mrs. Casey, wife of William Casey who died in 1959, would have celebrated her 100th birthday on July 30.She was born in Lowell on July 30, 1903, a daughter of the late Martin J. and Annie (Donlon) Hoar. She was educated in Lowell schools and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.Mrs. Casey was part of the first group of women to enter the Women's Army Corps in 1942, serving 18 years in Europe and the United States.In her early 60s, she began her second career at Dromoland Castle, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Ireland, working in various capacities including manager of the castle's gift shop. Upon her retirement, 23 years later, the gift shop was named for her.Mrs. Casey was a world traveler, visiting such countries as Russia, the Holy Land, Norway and most of Europe. She also made the pilgrimage to Oberammegau, Bavaria, three times to attend the Passion Play, which is only held once every 10 years. At the age of 80, she took her first ride on the Concorde and in her late 80s took a ride on the Orient Express.Mrs. Casey retired, with her sister Anna Hoar, to Pompano Beach during the winter months and lived in Lowell during the summer. She spent the last years of her life at Blair House Assisted Living and then Chelmsford Crossings before becoming a resident of Sunny Acres in October 2001.Mrs. Casey is survived by a nephew, William H. Hoar and his wife, Susan, of Chelmsford; a niece, Barbara Hoar of Lowell; a brother-in-law, Cesaire "Phil" Clouet Jr. of Stoney Point, N.Y.; a great-niece, Susan A. Alves of Jamaica Plain; a great-nephew, Devin Hoar of Chelmsford; and a cousin, Eileen James and her husband, Paddy, of Dublin, Ireland.She also leaves many close friends including Mrs. Frederick W. Davis of Kirkland, Wash., Charles and Betty Sweeney of Amesbury, Father John J. Nichols of Newport, R.I., Ms. Carmel Murphy of London, Rita Sullivan of Centerville and Bernard and Mary McCartan of Newark, Del.Mrs. Casey was also the sister of the late Madeline Clouet and Margaret, Anna, Henry, William and Joseph Hoar, and was a close friend of the late Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.
