Mary E. Carey (nee Hopkins) a Dobbs Ferry resident for 12 years died peacefully at home on October 9, 2001. She was 85. Mary was born December 23, 1915 in the Bronx to Thomas and Mary (O'Brien) Hopkins. Mary attended Hunter College and worked for the New York Library. She married Edward J. Carey on February 14, 1942. She was predeceased by her husband and daughter Anne. Mary is survived by three sons Edward of Irvington, John of Dobbs Ferry and Thomas of New York City, her daughters in law Maureen, Eileen and Esperanza and seven grandchildren. In the early 1950's she co-founded the 10,000 member North Town Civic Association. Mary was the founder and first president of the Greystone Avenue Block Association which raised money to plant trees in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. She was a board member of the PS 7 Community Center and president of the P.S. 7 Parent Teachers Association. Later she was the proprietor of Blue Ribbon Collectibles. Mary devoted her love and energy to raising her children, improving the community and helping friends with her warmth, wit and wise counsel. Mass of the Resurrection Friday 9:30AM Church of the Sacred Heart, Dobbs Ferry. Visiting Thursday 2-4 and 7-9PM Edwards Dowdle Funeral Home. Interment Mt. Hope Cemetery.
