McCLURE, MARY CHENAULT "RIP" VAN WINKLE, 95, of Louisville, died Monday, August 28, 2006 at the Episcopal Church Home. Born May 29, 1911, Mrs. McClure was the former Mary Chenault Van Winkle, the daughter of the late Julian Proctor "Pappy" Van Winkle and Kate Smith Van Winkle. She was a graduate of The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, New York and attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She was a lifelong and active member of Second Presbyterian Church. Throughout her life, Mrs. McClure was devoted to community service. She began rolling bandages with her mother for the Red Cross at the age of six. She served as president of the Junior League of Louisville in 1938 and as a member of its national board as well. She received the organization's Founders' Award in 1990. Mrs. McClure was the founder and first president of the Volunteers' Bureau, now known as the Volunteer Connection of the Metro United Way. In 1990, in celebration of the organization's 50th anniversary, she received Metro United Way's Allen Society Award in Volunteer Development. She also served as president of the Children's Hospital Board in 1958 and helped found the Family & Children's Agency, now Family & Children First, serving as its president in 1956. In 1989, she received the John C. Norman Award for her continued concern for and service to children and their families. Mrs. McClure served on other community boards including the Visiting Nurse Association and the Community Chest (now Metro United Way) where she received the Allen Society's Continuous Service Award in 1992 for 60 years of active participation. She also served on the boards of Historic Locust Grove and Preservation Alliance. She was a long time docent at the Speed Art Museum and tour guide of historic Main Street for Preservation Alliance. She was a past member of the Filson Historical Society, the Speed Art Museum, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Glenview Garden Club, the Louisville Country Club, and the Pendennis Club. An avid gardener, she was instrumental in the restoration of the gardens at Gardencourt in Louisville, KY, and Liberty Hall in Frankfort, KY. Mrs. McClure was preceded in death by her husband, Charles King McClure Jr.; and her brother, Julian Proctor Van Winkle Jr. Survivors include a daughter, Chenault McClure Conway; a son, Charles King "Mac" McClure III (Tori), both of Louisville; three grandchildren, Chenault "Ceci" Conway Boden (Dale) of Louisville, Stewart Lyne Conway (Karen) of Camano Island, WA, and Clay Schuyler McClure of Washington, DC; a step-granddaughter, Elizabeth Bradley Hagan of Louisville; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. McClure has donated her body to the University of Louisville Medical School to further Alzheimer's research. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2006 at Second Presbyterian Church Chapel, 3701 Old Brownsboro Road. Visitation will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Family & Children First, Second Presbyterian Church, the Speed Art Museum, or a charity of the donor's choice.
