Carter, Mary Etta Crowder 103 years, 241 daysOcala - Mary Etta Crowder Carter, 103 years, 241 days of Ocala passed away at her home on Monday, March 8, 2010. Mary was born in Durham, NC, and came to Ocala in 1964 from Takoma Park, MD. Mary was a devoted member and volunteer of St. Marks Methodist Church. She volunteered with Interfaith Emergency Services and Meals-On-Wheels until the age of 92. A loyal election poll worker, Mary was present the first time that women and African-Americans exercised their right to vote. She even saw Babe Ruth play baseball. Mary is preceded in death by her brother-Walter Crowder; her husband of 51 years, Robert Henry Carter; and daughter; Doris Elizabeth Thompson. Survivors include her daughter; Jacqueline McCleaf (Tito Comas) of Ocala; son; Robert Earl Carter, Sr. (Ruby) of Hyattsville, MD; daughter; Phyllis Carter Daw of South Hill, VA, 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, 7 great-great-great grandchildren. She also leaves her devoted primary caregiver Joanne Trentham, and caregivers Betty Forest and Peggy Kuyper. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Friday, March 12, 2010 from. 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at St. Marks Methodist Church prior to her celebration service starting at 11:00 AM, led by Rev. Dan Jones. Burial will follow. Arrangements by Roberts Funeral Homes, Downtown Chapel. 352-622-4141.
