CARPENTER Mary (Molly) Moreland, 66, died of leukemia on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, in Richmond, Virginia. She was born February 21, 1948 in Knoxville, Tennessee. At age five she moved with her family to Lexington, Kentucky, where her father took a position as a professor in the Biological Sciences department at the University of Kentucky. In Lexington she attended the University School and graduated from Lafayette High School, then attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, obtaining a B.A. in History in 1970. She went on to obtain two Master degrees: a Master of Social Work with a middle management concentration from Tulane University in 1974, and a Master of Public Health with an emphasis on maternal and child health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. She spent her health-care career serving pregnant women and children, with her last position being a health policy analyst for the State of Virginia. She retired the end of 2013 and studied to become a certified tree steward for the City of Richmond, which gave her much joy. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Richmond where she sang in the choir, served as an Elder and Deacon and on the Mission Council, and participated on a mission trip to Guatemala while serving on the Council. She was preceded in death by her father John Melvin Carpenter, and her brother John Hefley Carpenter. Survivors include her mother Mary Wilkes Meadors Carpenter of Lexington, Kentucky, her sister Gene Batchelder Carpenter of Savannah, Georgia, her nephew Andrew Hefley Carpenter of Lexington, Kentucky, her uncle George Hefley Meadors (Kay) of Homer, Louisiana, her aunt Elizabeth Ann Huey of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and several first cousins and their children. Molly's memorial service will be Sunday, February 1, 2015, 2pm at the Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North Fifth Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219. Her ashes will be interred in the Courtyard Garden next to the sanctuary at the beginning of the service with a reception in the chapel following the service. In lieu of flowers Molly requested that memorial contributions be made to either the Second Presbyterian Church music program (address above) or Voices for Virginia's Children, online at www.vakids.org, or 701 East Franklin Street, Suite 807, Richmond, VA 23219.
