FRIENDSHIP -- Mary Simmons Carlson, 84, died peacefully in her home on Nov. 16, 2005, following a brief illness.She was born on Sept. 21, 1921, a daughter of Susie Corinne Smith Simmons and Harvey Austin Simmons. She lived in Wollaston and Waban, Mass., graduating from Newton High School in 1939. Following her graduation from Simmons College in 1943, she was employed in its cafeteria as assistant dietitian for two years before taking a position as dietitian in a Hartford, Conn., school.On Aug. 23, 1947, she married her husband of 58 years, Sum-ner T. Carlson, and moved to Friendship. It was there she raised her two children and became an active member of the community.She was a Girl Scout leader, involved in the Friendship School Community Club, and a member of her sewing circle. In later years, she served on the Assessment Appeals Board for the town of Friendship.Following several years as a homemaker, she returned to college to attain her teaching degree at the University of Maine, Orono.She was employed as a third-grade teacher at Miller Elementary School from 1964 to 1981. During that time, she also was involved in the Teacher's Association, which she served as president and negotiator.Upon retirement, she devoted her time to her family and many community organizations. She served as secretary for the Lincoln Home in Newcastle, secretary for the Waldoboro Women's Club, secretary for the Friendship Museum and a member of American Association of University Women. She eagerly donated a baby quilt or a hand-knitted sweater each year to the Methodist church fair.She was a woman of many talents and an accomplished pianist who enjoyed playing a wide range of music -- from Christmas carols for her family to classical music and Broadway show tunes. She was an avid reader and attended the local fall authors' series for many years, as well as a member of a bridge group. Handwork gave her many hours of pleasure, including cross-stitching, embroidery, sewing, quilting, rug making and knitting. Her family members cherish the many gifts of quilts and sweaters. She also is remembered as an excellent cook whose children fondly recall the aroma of raised doughnuts waiting for them when they arrived home from school.She will be lovingly missed by all who knew her, for her unselfish devotion and caring ways.She was predeceased by her infant great-grandson, Seth Carlson.Survivors include her husband, Sumner T. Carlson of Friendship; daughter Virginia C. Bearce and her husband, Stephen, of Gray; son Glenn T. Carlson and his wife, Emily, of Winslow; grandchildren Greta and Corey Bearce of Gray, Sasha Fitzpatrick and her husband, Brad, of Winslow, Glenn Carlson of Gorham, N.H., Seth Carlson and his wife, Angie, of Cresview, Fla., and Amy Carlson of Winslow; great-grandchildren Siena and Caden Fitzpatrick of Winslow and Ethan Carlson of Cresview, Fla.; sister Letha Rasmussen of Friendship; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at Hall Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be may be made to Friendship Ambulance, c/o Phyllis Conary, P.O. Box 88, Friendship 04547.Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hall Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Waldoboro.
