She died August 16, 2014.Mary Belle attended Ward Belmont School and graduated high school at St. Catherine's School in Richmond, VA. She worked as a secretary at the Board of World Missions for the Presbyterian Church, where she met Herbert Petrie Mitchell, whom she married in 1949. The newlyweds went to the Republic of Korea later that same year, where they served as missionaries until 1971, with a brief interruption for the start of the Korean War. They raised six children and returned to the United States to serve churches in Tucker, GA and Nashville.She was active in volunteer work at her church, the Belle Meade Garden Club, and local chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the National Society of The Colonial Dames, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her life was characterized by her love of Jesus Christ, demonstrated by devotion to family, friends and service to others.Mary Belle was preceded in death by son, Matthew, husband, Petrie, brothers Jack and Matt, and sisters Betty and Ellen.She is survived by five children, John (Margie), Thomas (Naomi), Marion (Keith), William (Debbie), Petrie (Ruth); daughter-in-law, Betsy (Matthew); twenty grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.A Memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, August 23 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN, with family visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m.Memorial gifts may be given to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 33 Burton Hills Blvd, Nashville, TN.
