MARY ALYCE CHANDLER JOHNSON Mary Alyce Chandler Johnson, 93, died peacefully at home on May 20, 2014. She was born in Moundville, Alabama but was a long time resident of Stuart, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert V. Johnson, and John J. Rooks. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Kahler of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Robin Knebels (Chuck) of Alpharetta, Georgia; a son, Robert C. "Rudy" Johnson (Susan), of Stuart; a brother, Walter Bryan "Buster" Chandler of Moundville; grandchildren, Brenna Askew, Rebecca Purdy, Eric Johnson, Kelly Johnson and Logan Knebels; great grandchildren, Chase Purdy and Gwen Johnson; devoted caregiver and friend for over 30 years, and loved like a daughter, Angela Caraballo; and devoted caregiver, Marie Sanon. She graduated from the University of Alabama. She taught at Hale County High School during World War II and after moving to Stuart in 1946 started Stuart's first Kindergarten at the "Old" First Methodist Church downtown. Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and a 61 year charter member and past President of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She later earned her Real Estate License and helped run her husband's agency for several years. She sold many lots at Stuart Yacht and Country Club, Stuart's first private golf club. Mary loved Alabama Football, playing the piano, genealogy, reading, boating, golf and bridge. She was a wonderful, loving wife, Mother, friend, and a very lively, entertaining conversationalist. She will be greatly missed. Visitation will be Friday, May 23, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Treasure Coast Seawinds Funeral Home, 950 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart, FL 34994. A Graveside service will be held Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., Fernhill Memorial Gardens, 1501 South Kanner Highway, Stuart, FL 34994. In lieu of flowers, contributions as a memorial may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, or First United Methodist Church of Stuart, or YMCA of the Treasure Coast.
