Mary Alyce (Early) Carpenter passed away at her home of her daughter on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, following a battle with cancer.Mrs. Carpenter was born on Aug. 23, 1932, in Birmingham to Harry V. and Callie L. Early. She graduated from Ensley High School and attended Jefferson State College. She joined the staff at American Cast Iron Pipe Company as a typist and retired as manager of invoice and sales accounting after 35 years of service. She was a devoted mother and set an example of strength, courage and determination for her children. Mrs. Carpenter was a former columnist for the ACIPO news magazine and was an accomplished amateur artist working in watercolors, acrylic and ceramics. She loved archeology and wanted to be an archeologist when she was young. She enjoyed cross stitching, "armchair" travel to the British Isles, antiquing and container gardening. As the family genealogist, she was able to trace the family tree back to 1678 when her Irish ancestors came to the United States. In the last years of her life, she particularly enjoyed attending art classes with her sister given by her niece, Linda Renee Franklin, and the antics and company of Mr. Jingles, her pet cat.As a child, Mrs. Carpenter collected metal cans, rubber and anything that could be used to support the efforts of World War II. She was a tomboy and loved to climb trees, swing on a rope swing near her home, skate and run. Throughout her life, she maintained close friendships with those who shared her childhood and was responsible for organizing a reunion of Birmingham's Fairview Elementary School for students who attended in the early 1940s. Mrs. Carpenter was a faithful member of St. James Catholic Church of Gadsden. Mrs. Carpenter was predeceased by her parents; husband, J.C. Carpenter Jr.; and son, Mark W. Carpenter. Survivors include her loving daughters, Lajuana S. (Earl) Boggler and Teresa "Tink" Carpenter; daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn Carpenter; grandchildren, Callie (Ben) Taylor, Coy (Amy) Boggler, Melissa Boggler and Brandy (Trey) Nesmith; great-grandchildren, Martin and Devin Branum, Reagan Warren, Nelson and Timothy Boggler and Jordan and Christian Nesmith; brother, Harry V. (Marilyn) Early Jr.; sister, Edna (Ralph) Rowe; nephews, Ralph Rowe Jr. Chris Rowe and Harry V. Early III; and beloved niece, Linda Renee (Jim) Franklin.The family would like to express a very special thank you to Dr. Sandra Carpenter for her care and friendship over the past years. We love you very much. The family also thanks the staff of Riverview Regional Medical Center, especially the third tower and the entire staff of Lawley Hospice in Southside for guiding us through this difficult time. The prayers of both St. James Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Lake sustained our entire family through this journey and we thank you so much.Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church with celebrant Father Gray Bean officiating and burial in Williams Southside Funeral Home-Memorial Park, 1009 Alabama Highway 77, Southside, 35907, immediately following the Mass.Pallbearers are Knights of Columbus, Gadsden, Council No. 3568.Rosary will be held from 6 to 6:30 tonight at Williams Southside Funeral Home, 1009 Alabama Highway 77, Southside, with visitation following until 7:30.Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be sent to St. James Catholic School, 700 Albert Rains Blvd., North Gadsden, AL 35902."To all things there is a season ...
