Allen, MaryMary Elizabeth Allen, 82 of Southbury, formerly of Ansonia passed away at her home on this day, February 26, 2013, with loving members of her family at her side. She was the beloved wife of the late John H. Allen Jr. Mary was born in Bridgeport on Easter Sunday 1930, the daughter of Allen E. and Loretta Penner Ward. She graduated from Central High School of Bridgeport '48 and New Haven State Teacher's College (SCSU) '52. This past fall along with her granddaughter and fellow alum, Mary proudly attended her 60th college class reunion, where she fondly reminisced with her favorite classmate Dorothy. Prior to starting her family and raising seven children, Mary taught elementary school in West Haven. Being an entrepreneurial and hardworking couple, she and her late husband John founded Allen Plumbing Supply in Seymour in the early 70's. Together they grew their family business to one of the area's well known do-it-yourself plumbing supply centers and where Mary continued to oversee operations until her recent illness. While living in Ansonia, Mary was a communicant of the Church of the Assumption. She enjoyed being involved with her daughters in the girl scouts and campfire girls. When grandchildren came along, she would often spend many of her summers with them on memory filled camping trips to Strawberry Park. Always the quick wit, Mary was find of telling stories of her childhood growing up on Gem Ave. in Bridgeport, working at National Biscuit Company, being a camp counselor and the fun times at Seaside park and Pleasure Beach. Her strong spirit. Positive attitude and whimsical laugh have been passed down to her children; Mary (Joe Brozak); Kathleen (Dave Pantalone); Patricia (Ron Tuckett); John (Kim Allen); Martha (Charles Colburn); Loretta (Dave Bradt) and Sarah (Glenn Roman); 12 Grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is survived by her loving sister Eileen Vogeney and step brother Ed McCormick. She was predeceased by a brother Allen Ward. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 9:30 am in Church of the Assumption, 23 N. Cliff St., Ansonia, CT. 06401. Burial will follow in St. Michaels Cemetery, Stratford, CT. The Bennett Funeral Home 91 N. Cliff St., Ansonia is in charge of arrangements.
