ObituaryMARY ALICE ABELITHACA - A memorial service for Mary Alice Abel, who died on March 24, 2003, will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 315 N. Cayuga Street on Friday, April 11, at 2:00. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to UNICEF or another charity that works for children.Mary Alice Abel was born in Colorado on November 18, 1915 and grew up in Vernon Center, NY. She graduated from Keuka College and Hartford Seminary and had a long fruitful career as a Director of Christian Education and of day nursery schools in Presbyterian churches, including Park Central Presbyterian Church in Syracuse and Lake Street Presbyterian in Elmira. She retired in 1984 from the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago and moved to Ithaca in 1990. She was active in the American Association of University Women and the First Presbyterian Church. She married Walter White McCorkle in Elmira in 1944. He was killed in action in France in August 1944. In 1955 she married Rev. Earl Albert Abel who predeceased her in 1995.She is survived by her sons Stephen McCorkle and David Abel and his wife Sharon, by two step-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild, by her sisters Jane Hart of Ithaca and Kathryn Langeland of Greene and by many loving nieces and nephews.
