MARY A. MARINO ST. JOHN, IN Mary Agnes Marino, age 79, born to Daniel and Mary McGrotty in Philadelphia, PA on June 29, 1928 passed away on March 18, 2008 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by daughters: Susan (Larry) Santori of St. John, IN, Barbara (Mike) Campbell of Bozeman, MT, and Patricia (Curt) Milender of Sacramento, CA; seven grandchildren, two who live locally, Carlo Santori of St. John, IN and Laura (Santori) Blakeley of Crown Point, IN; and one great-grandchild. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Peter Marino 13 days prior, and son, Robert. Mary grew up in Philadelphia and New York City, and worked for Columbia University prior to marrying her husband Peter. While raising her family, they migrated from the East Coast, to the West Coast, and back to the Midwest to be near family for retirement. During retirement, she loved to snowbird and winter in Gulf Shores, AL. She was an outstanding daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and devoted caregiver to her husband of 60 years. She was an excellent cook and joked that she ran a restaurant for 30 years while raising her family. She was known for her creative and artistic abilities which included cooking, stitchery, painting, and interior decorating. She also enjoyed gardening, bowling, cross-word puzzles, and took pride in maintaining a beautiful home. Mary will be remembered by her family and friends for her quick Irish, New York wit and her "one line zingers." She had a remarkable inner strength which enabled her to face many of life's challenges with great courage. Family found strength from her character. She was loved by all and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. A private memorial service has been planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Hospice of the Calumet Area in her memory would be appreciated.
