MARTHA VIRGINIAO'QUIN, 92 LAKELAND - Martha Virginia O'Quin, 92, of Lakeland, FL, passed from this life safe in the arms of Jesus on October 24, 2010 due to natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents Laura Whiddon Dasher and Robert Byron Clark, husband Mark O'Quin, siblings Horace and Lillian and daughter Jacqueline O'Quin. Virginia is survived by her sister Jean Hewitt, daughter Judith Taylor (Robert), son John (Marli), grandchildren Teresa Templin Weibley (Richard), Brian and Bruce Templin, Wendeline Furen Carlton (Pat), Patricia O'Quin and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. O'Quin was born on November 15, 1917. At the age of 30 in an era in which female-owned businesses were unusual, Virginia founded the first employment agency in Polk County, FL, Polk Placement Services, later O'Quin Personnel. From 1947 until her retirement at age 86 in 2004, Mrs. O'Quin matched skilled applicants with job openings throughout the area, particularly within the flourishing phosphate and citrus industries. A trailblazer and entrepreneur, she also established the first temporary administrative and clerical services placement agen-cy in the area, Kelly Services. Mrs. O'Quin's work ethic was characterized by attention to each applicant and employer. She personally interviewed every job seeker, utilizing her relationships with Greater Lakeland businesses and prayerful insight to link applicants with jobs. Virginia was deeply honored to receive the 1996 P. Scott Linder Small Business Award at age 79, as well as an honorary MBA from Metropolitan University. It was her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ that strengthened and inspired Mrs. O'Quin through the raising of three children while working as a professional business woman and in her retirement. Virginia particularly loved to worship, and spent the vast majority of her time in intercessory prayer for others in her later years. She maintained an almost constant awareness of her dependence on the Lord for meaning, purpose and power in life. Her last words were a prayer of worship to her King. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. ( James 5:16b) The entire family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the compassionate attention of her friend and caregiver Mary Novack, and the kindness and skill of the Palm Terrace staff and Magnolia Team of Hospice in her final weeks. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Oak Hill Burial Park, Pastor Steve Strader presiding. Those wishing to may contribute to www.loveachild.com which was her favorite charity.
