Wright, Martha Susan (Solomon)Martha Susan Wright (Solomon) of New York City and formerly of Ithaca, NY died on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 after an extended illness. Martha was 65. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 23, 1945 to Lemuel and Ernestine Wright. Martha attended schools in the Philadelphia area before moving with her family to Ithaca where she attended Boynton Junior High School and graduated from Ithaca High School in 1963. Martha received a BFA from Cornell University in 1969, a Masters Degree in Linguistics from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1975, and both an MA and a PhD from the University Of Massachusetts, Amherst in Theoretical Linguistics in 1983. She spent the 1983 school year at Donghai University in Taizhong, Taiwan. Martha held a Fulbright Research position in the Department of Linguistics at Tilburg University in Tilburg, the Netherlands in 1984-1985. She also held academic positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, and Binghamton University. In 1997 Martha received a JD degree from the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in New York. In recent years Martha has held various positions in New York combining her language and legal expertise working for several major corporations and law firms. Martha was fluent in Mandarin Chinese and French and also had an excellent reading knowledge of German, Spanish and Dutch. Her research also included work with Native American languages, particularly Mohawk. Martha was also a very accomplished knitter and she made beautiful pieces of needlework, particularly Hardanger embroidery. Martha is survived by her husband Morris Solomon, her daughter and son-in-law Molly Rose Solomon and Jay Garcia and her grandson Sidney Benjamin Garcia all of NYC. In addition she is survived by her four sisters and their husbands, Carolyn and David Corson of Ithaca, Priscilla and Frederick Pazzano of Gambrills, Maryland, Barbara and Dennis Falgout of Vienna VA, and Nancy and John Matyas of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and nephews. Private funeral services were held in New York City.
