Martha Plumpton Smith, 78, of Chatham, MA, passed away suddenly at her home on December 3, 2013 at the age of 78. Martha was born and raised in Marcellus, New York and graduated from Potsdam State Teachers College, located in Potsdam, NY. After graduation she taught in Glens Falls, NY and then in the Nyack, NY School District before moving to Cape Cod. Before her retirement she worked at Sylvan Realty and Pine Acres Realty in Chatham. In retirement she found great joy as a Folk art Artist and was the treasurer of the South Chatham Public Library. Martha leaves behind her husband of over 55 years, Art, along with her three children, Andrew and his wife, Katie of Brewster, MA and Eric and Caroline of Harwich, MA; her sister, Margaret Wicks of Syracuse, NY, and nine grandchildren. A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, December 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Rd., Chatham, MA 02633. Burial will be private.
