Athens - Miss Martha Smith, a longtime resident of Athens, died Sunday, November 23, 2008. One of six children born to Dr. S.S. Smith and Tallulah Francis Smith, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Starr Smith of Augusta; and her four sisters: Marie Avera, Athens, Maude Quillian, Athens, Louise Graham, Greenville, N.C. and Ann Jarrell, Athens.Though born in Watkinsville, Miss Smith moved to Athens when she was just nine months old, at which time her father, a physician and surgeon, relocated his practice and his family so that his children would have the advantages of growing up and attending schools in Athens. The family resided at 135 Prince Avenue in a house sold after the death of her parents to First Baptist Church and subsequently moved to Oconee County and beautifully restored.After attending kindergarten at Lucy Cobb Institute, Martha Smith went to Athens public schools and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1927. For the next several years, she taught in elementary schools in Dublin and Montezuma, Ga. and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., before returning to Athens, where she taught initially at Chase Street Elementary School, then at Barrow Elementary School. Following her career as a teacher, Miss Smith was for a number of years employed by Southern Mutual Insurance Company. Called "Marney" by many friends and family members, Miss Smith was a lifelong member of Athens First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Athens Junior Assembly, which became the Athens Junior League and of the Athens Country Club, having joined in 1926 as one of the club's original members.Survivors include nieces and nephews: Marie Avera Ewing of Americus, Ga. and West Dennis, Mass., Carol Quillian Buchanan, Fernandina Beach, Fla., Harold Smith, Augusta, Ethel Smith Cureton, Columbia, S.C., Lawrence Graham, Greenville, N.C., Fran Jarrell Lane, Athens and Kitty Jarrell Meyran, Athens. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 26 at 11 a.m. in the Sexton's House at Oconee Hill Cemetery with Rev. Wesley Stephens and Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Following the service, family and friends are invited to remain for a reception.In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Martha Smith may make memorial contributions to Athens First United Methodist Church, Athens YWCO or Friends of Oconee Hill Cemetery, P.O.
