Martha S. FlemingMartha Sue Fleming departed this life at 8:25 p.m. on the evening of Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. "Grannie Sue", as she was known by family and friends, was born in Tuscumbia, Ala. to Roy and Grace McCorkle on Feb. 22, 1924. Her grandparents, William and Elsie Spurgeon, were early residents of the city. She was an extremely competent business woman and spent most of her life in management. She worked for several national hotel chains in upper managerial positions throughout the south. She had the blessing of longevity in her family, accomplished so much in life and influenced so many people in her 89 years on Earth. Grannie Sue was so loved by her family and even though they know that they'll be with her again someday, her passing will leave a great void and she'll be missed very much.In addition to her parents and grandparents, Mrs. Fleming was also preceded in death by her brothers, Roy McCorkle Jr. and Robert W. "Bobby" McCorkle. She is survived by her daughter, Elsie Bohannon (Tommy); son, Allen Thomas Smith; sister, Alice Sockwell; brother, James Hanson; grandsons, Mike Pyle (Carol), Mark Pyle (Michelle), Todd Bohannon (Stephanie), and Tommy Smith (Tina); and great-grandchildren, Justin Pyle (Courtney), Katie Pyle, Erica and Brandon Bohannon, and Katrina and Sabrina Smith; and great-great-grandchild, Elijah Pyle. In our family we view the passing of a child of God as a promotion and a time of celebration. We are so happy that she is free of the body that had brought so much suffering over the past few years. A celebration and remembrance of her life will be on Thursday, Dec. 12, at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 p.m. until service time.The family acknowledges with gratitude the station four staff of Mitchell-Hollingsworth, especially Heather McDaniel, for the care offered to Mrs. Fleming.
