Mark Hamilton Haskell Sr., 42 BRUNSWICK -- Mark Hamilton Haskell Sr., 42, of Brunswick, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, in South Portland from injuries resulting from a plane crash. Mark was born in Brunswick on April 25, 1968, the son of Warren H. and Marilyn L. Allen Haskell. He attended local schools and graduated from Topsham Christian Academy in 1986. At a very young age, Mark loved anything to do with planes and flying. He flew his first solo flight at the age of 17. He was an active alumnus of Daniel Webster College. He went on to Oklahoma City, Okla., where he attended Air Traffic Control (ATC) School and was Valedictorian for the ATC Program. His entire 20 year FAA Air Traffic Control career was spent at the Portland International Jetport. Mark was involved in other special projects with Portland Jetport and Brunswick NAS. He participated in air shows both as a pilot in his Yak-52 and as an FAA representative coordinating airspace and activities. He also volunteered his time and airplane in the FAA cosponsored Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy program, which exposes middle and high school students to careers in aviation. Mark was instrumental in completing air traffic studies and aerospace redesign for the Portland Tower, spending much time researching air traffic. He was a Services Provider for the FAA Safety team, contributing his expertise in Yak aircraft, radial engines, and Air Traffic Control operations advancing aviation safety. He was a recipient of a 'Point With Pride' Award for outstanding assistance provided to an aircraft in distress that went down in Casco Bay which resulted in saving the pilot's life. Mark received numerous letters of commendation for providing superior air traffic services in difficult emergency situations. In annual assessments, Mark received outstanding ratings virtually every year. His affable nature and general good will made him a Mark Hamilton Haskell Sr. favorite among controllers and staff at Portland Tower. He was always willing to lend assistance whenever anyone was in need. His absence will be sorely felt. He served as a former Union Representative for the National Association of Air Traffic Controllers at the Portland Tower, was a member of the Red Star Pilot's Association, and assisted and coordinated the 'Pumpkin Drop' in Sanford. Mark also flew in the National Day of Prayer Flight over Augusta, and flew Fly By's over the Yarmouth Clam Festival. In 2009, he was involved with the Brunswick Memorial Day wreath drop from a helicopter. His faith was very important to him. Mark was a member of the Brunswick Church of the Nazarene, and this past year, he was working on becoming an Ordained Minister. Mark was due to complete this examination for ordination in Illinois. He married Alison L. Smith on Oct. 5, 1996. He was predeceased by his father who died in 2003. Surviving are his wife of Brunswick; his two sons, Mark H.
