Marjorie Esther Guthrie It is with sadness that the family of Marjorie Ester Guthrie announces her passing on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Battlefords Union Hospital at the age of 85 years. Marjorie is survived by her husband Leslie of North Battleford; three sons Larry (Monica) of Langley, BC, Lorne (Lorraine) of St. Albert, Alberta, James (Heather) of North Battleford; six granddaughters; one great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. Marjorie spent her formative years on the family farm at Prince, Saskatchewan. Transportation to school at Prince was by riding a pony or driving a buggy. In winter, it was by sleigh. On completing her grade twelve she went to Battleford and stayed at the school home while taking a commercial course. On completion of the course, she went to Toronto and spent a year there working for an insurance company. She returned to North Battleford and got employed as a receptionist for Dr. MacDonald. Marjorie enjoyed playing softball and competing with teams from the other district schools and especially the sports days. One of her fondest memories was the summer she spent a week in North Battleford taking Red Cross swimming lessons. The highlight of her time in Battleford was when she was leading actress in a play put on in the old Opera House. In 1949 she married Leslie Guthrie and they spent 60 years together. In 1950 she stopped working to raise a family. When all the family had left home, she took a job as the Welcome Wagon hostess. She was active in her church, past President of the Kinnette Club and founding member of the Actett Club (the womens' division of Associated Canadian Travellers) and served as President. She also spent time canvassing for various organizations. In her later years, she took up Bridge which became an important part of her activities. She spent many evenings with close friends playing cards and socializing. We will miss that smile, those big brown eyes and beautiful face. So play it sweet in heaven, Marj, cause that's where you should be; I'm not crying cause I feel sorry for you, I am crying for all of us. The funeral was held in Third Avenue United Church on Saturday, June 12, 2010. The burial took place at the City Cemetery, North Battleford. Donations may be made to Wa Wa Shrine Patient Transportation Fund, Wa Wa Shrine Centre, 2605 Hamilton Street, Regina, SK S4P 2E1, or to the Donors Choice.
