Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Black Martin, widow of A. Carl Martin, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and advocate for the mentally ill and their families, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at the Hospice House of Laurens County.Mrs. Martin was born in Greenville, a daughter of the late Joseph T. and Sarah Goldsmith Black. She served on the first Board of Directors of Gateway Club House, a center for the rehabilitation of the mentally ill. She was also one of the founders of The Greenville Alliance For The Mentally Ill and The South Carolina Alliance for The Mentally Ill.Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Martin and husband, Charles Chassaing, of Raleigh, N.C., and Judith Larson and husband, Allen, of Bedford, Va.; and her son, Alan Martin of Raleigh, N.C. Grandchildren include Willard Hooton and wife Glenna and Christian Creech and husband Alex; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Hooton, Jackson Hooton, Emery Creech, and Margaret (Maggie) Grace Creech. Also surviving are brothers, Jack Black and wife, Della, of Pickens, Bill Black and wife, Rica, of Easley; and sister, Ann Brown of Greenville.The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens.A memorial service will follow at The Pickens Presbyterian Church, with The Reverend Julie Schaaf officiating.
