Avis de décès de Margaret-Lockwood Hartman

MARGARET L. HARTMAN ITHACA - Margaret Lockwood Hartman died at home at Kendal at Ithaca on September 24, 2009. Margaret was born on July 10, 1912 near Buchanan, Virginia to an English mother and Bostonian father. She received her primary school education at the nearby town school, to which she "commuted" by horseback and pony cart. She then continued her education at St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock, Virginia. A two-year illness in her late teens was followed by a year at Business School in Roanoke, Virginia, and then employment and graduate study in the Agricultural Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Upon coming to Ithaca in 1935, she enrolled as a special student in Agricultural Economics at Cornell, and worked there as well. At Cornell, she met Paul L. Hartman, then a graduate student, whom she married in 1941. Margaret and Paul then moved to New York City where he was employed by Bell Laboratories. In 1946, they returned to Ithaca where Paul began his professorship with Cornell's Physics Department. Except for sabbatical leaves and many summers spent in the West, they remained in Ithaca. Margaret was active in community affairs, and served on the boards of directors for Challenge Industries and Meadow House, the Hostel admissions committee, and in the office of the Special Children's Center in its early days. She was a member of the League of Women Voters for many years. Her family vividly recalls the day she drove around Ithaca with a horse and buggy, urging its citizens to "get out of the horse and buggy days" and vote for the proposed City Charter. This particular horse, unused to automobiles, and balking at open grid bridges, provided a most exciting buggy ride! Always interested in economics and finance, she was a regular tax counselor with TCE and VITA, and managed household finances and investments with great skill and attention to detail. Margaret loved mountains and trees; enjoyed camping in tents and trailers in the national parks; had a green thumb for growing flowers and vegetables, and was known for her colorful begonias and geraniums. She also loved her West Highland Terrier, Jamie, who moved to Kendal with her in his old age. She is survived by her three daughters: Barbara H. Freeman of Cape Elizabeth, Maine and husband Jerry, Laurel L. Hartman of Portland, Maine, and Sara W. Hartman of Maynard, Massachusetts; two grandchildren: Elizabeth Freeman of Portland, Maine and Mark Freeman with his wife Ruvani of Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania; and four great-granddaughters: Duranya, Hasadri, Emily, and Kisara. She is also survived by her sisters, Jane Barney of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Mary Sawicki of Chevy Chase, Maryland. A reception in her memory will be held in the living room of Kendal at Ithaca on Monday, September 28, 2009 from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospicare or to the Residents' Assistance Fund of Kendal at Ithaca.
