KEYES, Margaret MunroJune 12, 1925 - January 9, 2014It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Margaret Munro Black Keyes (née McBurney) in her 89th year after a courageous five-month battle with heart failure. Born in Dundee, Scotland, Margaret emigrated to Ottawa in 1929 with her widowed mother, later attending Commerce High School then working in administration at the Civic Hospital. Margaret was predeceased by her cherished husband of 63 years, Andrew Arthur (Frank) Keyes (b. Campbell's Bay, Que.), her parents Robert McBurney and Maggie Pannell (née Hepburn, then McBurney, then Thomson) and her half brother David Thomson. Margaret was a wilful, social woman with a strong maverick streak who adored travelling the world with her husband, for whom she later cared selflessly as he succumbed to the effects of childhood polio. Her dimples, impish humour and chocolate chip cookies will be deeply missed by many. She is survived by her daughter Karin Keyes Endemann, her grandchildren Kirstin, Birgitta (Dominic Lachapelle) and Björn Endemann and great- grandsons Tavias and Caleb Lachapelle. Her award-winning quilts - made with love - will continue to warm our nights. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ottawa Heart Institute whose doctors and devoted nurses have our utmost thanks for their sensitive, nuanced care. Friends and family may call at the Heart and Crown on Preston Street on Sunday, January 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. for a celebration of her life.
