HARRIS, Margaret Rose (nee Marway) June 22, 1927 - April 21, 2015 After a short illness a peaceful end. Margaret was born in Montreal, Quebec to Julia and James Marway, and was an only child. She met her husband-to-be Samuel George Harris at the age of 14. They married and lived in Montreal raising their family of four children, Samuel Raymond, Alan Clayton, Judith Julia, and Carole Margaret. In 1967 the family of six made an epic cross-country trip in a 1957 Ford station wagon, to start a new life in beautiful British Columbia. They settled in Brentwood Bay where Margaret was very social and generous with her time, and made many close friends and acquaintances. Margaret was on the leading edge of cultural changes for the empowerment of women, and rejoined the work force in the early 1970s. She was very capable and studied business; became a bookkeeper for BC Ferries, and held a respected and responsible position for many years until her retirement in 1993. Margaret became an accomplished public speaker and a leader in Toastmistress for Vancouver Island. As her mother Julia Marway aged, Margaret became her caregiver, sharing an apartment in the Cook Street Village. They became involved with the Cook Street Activity Center, giving much volunteer time, and enjoyed the company of the people they met there. Eventually, after the passing of her mother, Margaret moved into Minton House. Margaret was predeceased by her son Alan Clayton (Wendy) Harris. She leaves behind her three surviving children Sam Harris, Judy Stevenson, and Carole Harris (Arnie); three grandchildren, Brent Stevenson (Tanya), Lara Smith (Matt) and Sarah Harris, and four great grandchildren, Lilly and Keegan Stevenson, and Nate and Sammy Harris. Funeral service will be at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Fairfield United Church, 1303 Fairfield Rd, Victoria, BC (parking available at the school parking lot off Thurlow Street) followed by a reception at the Cook Street Village Activity Center, 380 Cook Street, Victoria, B.C. from 3:00 to 4:30.
