GUTHRIE - Margaret F. Former Williamsville resident and longtime disability advocate, Margaret F. Guthrie, 91, died April 24, 2010 in Seattle. Born in Minneapolis to Nell and Oscar Carl Flagstad on July 12, 1918. Wife of well known researcher Dr. Robert Guthrie, developer of the PKU screening test. During their 40 years in WNY, Bob and Margaret joined other parents to form organizations such as People Inc., that now provide services for persons with developmental disabilities. This included the group home in Williamsville where her son John came to live. She also volunteered with the Red Cross, Williamsville Schools and North Presbyterian Church. Following the 1995 deaths of Robert and son, John, she began anew in Seattle, finding new pastimes, friends and volunteer opportunities. She'll be remembered for her lessons of empathy, service and compassion taught to her family; daughters, Patricia, Barbara, Anne and son Tom of WA; son James of KS; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; sisters, Mary Lou Doll and Virginia Hoyt of MN, and many nieces, nephews. A memorial service was held May 15th in Seattle. Celebrations of her life are planned this fall in Minneapolis and Williamsville, where she will be interred. To honor Margaret's life of service, the family requests donations in her name be contributed to: People, Inc. or other causes found on her tribute page at www.margaret.guthrie.muchloved.com
