SCHRETLEN, Margaret Elizabeth (Peggy) 2008-01-04 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Peggy Schretlen (née Miller) on December 30th, 2007 in her 88th year in Kelowna. She is survived by brothers Donald and Philip, and sister Jean, 33 nephews and nieces and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews. She is predeceased by husbands Jack Wellings and John Schretlen, sisters Birdie and Helen, and brothers Louis, Martin and Stanley. Born in Resource, Saskatchewan, Peggy completed high school in Melfort, business school in Prince Albert and joined the work force in time to contribute to the war effort in Manning Depots in Toronto and Vancouver. In 1947 she joined the Kimberly-Clark paper mill in Terrace Bay, Ontario, as a stenographer and retired 27 years later as a senior buyer. An avid curler, she was introduced to the sport by her first husband Jack with whom she won many mixed curling events. She skipped her ladies team to five regional curling championships, coming very close each time to representing all of Ontario in the national championships. She was one of 20 women selected from across Canada for a goodwill curling tour of Scotland in 1971. On moving to Kelowna in 1975, she actively pursued her second passion, golf, winning many club events and being elected Club Captain. Throughout her life, Peggy loved to travel and counted a 1979 tour of China among her most memorable trips. She traveled extensively with her second husband John Schretlen, whom she married in 1984, including trips to the U.S. Southwest, to the Middle East and cruises through the Panama Canal. She will be fondly remembered as a keen sportswoman, an outstanding cook, a gracious hostess, an affectionate sister, a thoughtful aunt and great supporter of family ties. A Memorial Service will be held at the St. Pius X Church, 1077 fuller Avenue, Kelowna at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 11th, 2008. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Peggy may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, 2268 Pandosy Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 1T2.
