HOAK - Margaret E. "Betty/Bega" Born July 2, 1914 to Benjamin and Eva Hamilton in Bradford, PA, lived most of her adult life in Buffalo, NY. She graduated from the Buffalo General School of Nursing in 1936 and enlisted with the 23rd Buffalo General Hospital Unit of the Army in 1942 as a Second Lieutenant. She served in North Africa, Italy and France from July of 1942 to November of 1945 and was discharged as a Captain. Betty was a member and past Treasurer of the Katherine Pratt Horton Chapter of the DAR in Buffalo, NY. A true adventurer at heart, Bega travelled the globe, loved history and spent much of her late adult life researching and compiling her family genealogy. If she wasn't entertaining people with the stories of her incredible life, she occupied herself with reading (she loved a good mystery) and crosswords. Predeceased by her parents, sister Mary Jane (James) O'Connor, sister-in-Law Kathryn (Edward) McGovern, and her husband of 40 years, Frank C. Hoak MD. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth (Bruce) Maine, NY, granddaughters Amanda (Edward) Newburgh, NY and Tabitha (Alyssa) Washington DC and grandson Jared (Amanda) Endwell, NY, and great-grandchildren Marshall and Adrielle; also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. Thanks and gratitude to special caretakers and little friends. Memorial at the discretion of the family. Donations in her honor may be made to the Volunteers of America (www.voa.org) or the SOS Shelter of Broome County (www.sosshelter.org).
