WELLS, Maine Margaret Ann Beck, 92, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008 at her home in Wells after a short illness. She was born in 1915 in Fitchburg, the daughter of John and Annie Hahn. After the tragic death of her mother in the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918, she was adopted by her maternal grandmother, Kath Singewald. She was educated, worked and lived in Fitchburg until her marriage to the late Ernest John Beck of Clinton in 1939. They lived in Marlborough for over 50 years until Ernests death in 1999. She was also predeceased by her two younger brothers, Raymond Hahn of Marblehead and John Jackman of Marlborough. She moved to her beloved Wells, Maine to join her daughter, where she lived until her death. Margaret was a member of the First Church Congregation in Marlborough for over 50 years and a longtime member of Womens Fellowship at the church. She truly enjoyed the friendships she developed there and the good works they did as a group. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Mizpah Chapter #29, Marlborough. Trained as a seamstress, she served as supervisor of the linen department of Marlborough Hospital for many years. She also loved doing handwork, from crocheting afghans for her grandchildren to braiding rugs for her home. She was an avid gardener and turned her backyards into bird and small animal sanctuaries. She had a passion for collecting Victorian porcelain, particularly French dinnerware. But her truest love was for her dogs. A longtime supporter of animal rescue, she supported Animal Rescue of Boston, Animal Welfare Society of West Kennebunk and Lifes Little Paws in New Durham, N.H. She not only supported the rescuers, but she adopted rescued cocker spaniels, as well. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Judith Roy of Wells; granddaughter, Wendy Davidson, currently living and working in the Mediterranean; grandson, Stephen Roy of Somerville; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law, all of Massachusetts; and many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Margarets family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to York Hospital, ICU, Wells Path and Home Care staffs for their wonderful care while she was a patient; the Reverend Herb Henry of the Wells Congregational Church for his wonderful support and most especially, the caring staff and volunteers of Hospice of Southern Maine, who filled her final days with love and dignity. A memorial to celebrate Margarets life will be held in Wells in the fall. Contributions in her memory may be made to Wells Congregational Church, P.O Box 759, Wells, ME 04090; Soups On, a Free Community Lunch Program, P.O. Box 759, Wells, ME 04090; or Lifes Little Paws, P.O. 61, New Durham, NH 03855.
