SMITH-The family of Mae Smith (nee Anderson), formerly of Dilke, SK, are deeply saddened by her death on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. Mae was born on March 22, 1926 to an immigrant Norwegian family, Anton Hansen (Anderson) and Karoline Johansen in the Mackenzie nursing home in Shaunavon, SK. She was the only one born in a nursing home, all the rest of her siblings were born on the farm near Scotsguard, SK. It is said by her older sister Alice, that Mae was so small when she was born, that she fit in a shoebox to take her home. Mae was the ninth child. Mae is also a first generation Canadian, being that her parents came here from South Dakota, USA in 1909 after the call to open Western Canada was announced. Mae took her schooling in Scotsguard, SK and also worked for various farmers and people around the district. Mae worked in Regina at the LaSalle, Champs, Kings and Palmer Hotels. It was here on October 11, 1945 that Mae and Lloyd P. Smith, of Dilke, SK, were married. They were married for 62 years until Lloyd passed away on November 10, 2007. Mae was predeceased by her siblings Andy Rudolph in infancy of Huron, SD, USA, Art of Malita, MB, Earl of Weyburn, Clarence and Harry of Regina, Alice of Delorain, MB and Sylvia of Botineau, ND, USA. She is remembered be her son Harvey of Regina; daughter Shirley (Ron) McNab; and her children Malissa (Mike) and her son Cody; Natasha (Regine) Alex and her children Taylor and Jade; Fabian; and Aashley (Steve) Matthews all of Moose Jaw and daughter Leona (Dan) Hungle and their children Dana Hungle and Shelley Young and her son Jonathan of Edmonton, AB. She is also survived by her sister Martha of Minot, ND, USA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and her first cousin in Egil Solhiem of Norway. Mae was an avid curler, being on many winning teams from Dilke with a lot of the local people. Mae was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge for around 20 years; she liked to knit, when the curling sweaters came about she knitted quite a few in Norwegian patterns and she also crocheted and embroidered. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East Regina, SK on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301, 2550 12 Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1.
