Mae-H. Hayes, née en 1924, fille de Hosie-T et Agnes-Underwood, est décédée le 16 novembre 2010 à l'âge de 14 ans.
"I have a lived a full life and I am ready to go."Mae Hamilton Hayes, 86, of Margerum, Ala., passed away Nov. 16, 2010. Mae was most affectionately referred to as "Granny" by family and friends alike.Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at Morrison Funeral Home, Cherokee, Ala. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Morris Hill Cemetery. Dwight Rivers will officiate.Mae was born Aug. 23, 1924, to Hosie T. Hamilton and Agnes Underwood Hamilton. On Feb. 25, 1939, at age 14, she married 21-year-old Herbert C. Hayes.Mae was a caring and devoted mother, having her first of four children at age 15, and became a grandmother at age 34. As her children started families of their own, Granny Hayes's house on "The Hill" became the gathering place for our family. The love felt there reverberates through the generations, touching even those who only knew her for a short time.Granny was a skilled crafts woman. She was accomplished in ceramics, selling her wares in trade days and flea markets throughout the region. She did beautiful embroidery work, was a quilter and made sure her children, grandchildren and friends had plenty of quilts. Her love of crafts frequently saw her in her favorite store, Hobby Lobby. She was a member of the Circle of Joy Club at Margerum Methodist Church and the Riverton-Rose Trail Homemakers. She also had a pen-pal from Long Island, N.Y., with whom she enjoyed sharing phone calls, letters and crafts.Always independent, Mae went to work late in life at the shirt factory, in Iuka, Miss., where she made lifelong friends. After retiring, in addition to her crafts, she was an avid gardener who shared her bounty with friends and family.Granny thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and would often keep them so that their mothers could work. She spent many hours with her grandchildren swimming and camping by the lake. She took the time to teach them how to make ceramics and to can fruits and vegetables from her garden. And she passed on her legacy by telling stories of how life "used to be."Granny was well-known for her beautiful quilting. Her attention to tiny stitches and intricate details have produced many extravagant quilts, each one filled with a special story or a piece of her past. She had a heart for giving … many quilts were made and given to family and friends. She also helped "The Valery Project" by making dresses for children in Guiana. She prepared food for those in the community that were sick, or providing transportation for neighbors when they were without a vehicle. She gave freely, never expecting anything in return. She often said, "Seeing the smile on their face, or the way their eyes light up, was the greatest payment of all."Granny had a great passion of living life to the fullest. She was adventuresome and was quick to pack her bag when anyone yelled, "Road Trip!!!" Her travels have taken her all across the United States.God entrusted us with this magnificent woman who has filled our lives with love, laughter and life … but the greatest gift of all was love. She was preceded in death by her husband, "Hub" Hayes (1987); two sons, William "Will" Hayes (1991) and Herbert "Calvin" Hayes Jr. (2004): her parents; three brothers, William "Bill" Hamilton, Wilmer "Tiny" Hamilton, Henry "Benny" Hamilton; and her lifelong friend and sister-in-law, Gladys Hayes.Survivors include daughters, Louise Howard-Linville-Lenz and husband, L.C., and Martha Couch and husband, Marion, who was like a son to her; her daughters-in-law, who thought of Granny as a second mother, Shirley Hall Hayes and Elba Harbin Hayes; 10 grandchildren, Sheila Palmgren (Sten), Christina Adams (Terry), DeAnna Frevold (Eric), Herbert Calvin "Herby" Hayes III, William Hosie Hayes Jr. (Melodie), Denese Nicolazzi (Anthony), Juanita Hayes, Hope Thomas (Joel), William Couch (Laura) and Bobby Couch (Lee); 11 great-grandchildren, Pamela Howard (Craig), Phillip Hayes, Brandy Hayes, Jonathan Hayes, Ryan Adams, Nickolas Frevold, Faith Hayes, Heather Adams, Gracieblue Thomas, Finnegan Thomas and Elijah Couch; four great-great-grandchildren, Mercedes Howard, Amber Howard, Justin Howard and Collin Howard. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. The most important thing is, even when we're apart, I will always be with you."In lieu of flowers, please honor her by helping a charity of your choice. As per Granny's request, obituary written by Bill Couch and Denese Nicolazzi.Morrison Funeral Home, Cherokee, will be directing.
