Madge Elizabeth Smithof Johnson CityMadge E. Smith, 90, of Johnson City, left this earthly plane on Friday, November 4, 2005, at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, in 1976; three sisters; and one brother. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and David Shoemaker, Sylvia Smith and Thomas Wright; grandchildren, Jessica and (Scott) Parker, N.C., Brandi and (Matt) Huyck, Chenango Forks, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren, Deziree, Hannah, Laura, and Emma Huyck, Sydney and Zachary Parker; brother-in-law, Leonard Dorwart; sister-in-law, Kathleen Merrill; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Emilia Czmor. Madge graduated from Binghamton High School in 1935. She was employed at Ansco in Binghamton, the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C., Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Ward, in Binghamton, and then retired from Marine Midland Bank. She was a former member of Women of the Moose, Binghamton. Because of her love of children and her desire to make a difference in the lives of others, she worked as a foster grandparent for many years. Up until her passing, Madge continued to maintain her sense of humor, determination, and independence. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her love of animals and children. The family and "Madger Badger" would like to thank the staff at Hilltop and J.G.J. Nursing Home for their kindness, care, and compassion.A Memorial Service will be held at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home Inc., 150 Main St., Johnson City, on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. Rev. Lea Harding, Director of Pastoral Care at UMH-Hilltop, will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Chaplains Fund at Hilltop Retirement Community, 1605 Davis Ave., Endwell, N.Y. 13760 in Madge E. Smith's memory.
