SMITH, MILDRED ARMSTRONG - 104, of Athens, died, Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 pm, December 30, 2014, at NHC of Athens. She was a native of Knoxville, she moved to Athens with her parents following her graduation from the Old Young High School in Knoxville.She was preceded in death by her parents Aaron Park and Odessa Ford Armstrong, and was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Ralph Smith and a son James M. "Jimdy" Smith. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens, where for many years she counted the church's offerings. She was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College. In her early business career she served as a deputy clerk in the Clerk and Masters Office in the McMinn County Court House, taught in the McMinn County and Athens City School Systems, before entering the banking profession at 1st National Bank where she helped establish the Bank's Trust Dept. and later at Athens Federal Saving and Loan (Athens Federal Community Bank), where she retired. She was a member of the Athens Browning Circle, and was very active in the Meals on Wheels program. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law; Jerry E. and Shirley H. Smith of Athens, three granddaughters; Anne H. Smith of Atlanta, Leslie S. Kinkead and her husband Barry of Woodstock, GA, Ellen S. Pac of Sparks, MD, one grandson; David A. Smith and his wife Mary of Athens, three great-granddaughters; Cassidy Evans, Holly Evans, and Brittany Corum; two great-grandsons, Zachary Smith and Luke Brooks; two nephews, Don A. Smith of Grinnell, Iowa and Ron B. Sherrill of Riceville; and a special cousin, Kathryn Ford Smith of Sebring, Fl. A funeral service will be conducted, 3:00 P.M., Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Jason Clark officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 P.M. at the funeral home prior to the service. The committal service for the family will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Staff of NHC of Athens for their loving care of Mildred for the past 4 years. The family suggests memorials be made to Tennessee Wesleyan College, 204 E. College Street, Athens, TN 37303, or to a charity of the givers choice.
